Administration


Eric Woernle, Principal

The Principal is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school.  He is responsible for ensuring the classical mission and high academic standards of the school through oversight, chairing the Curriculum Committee, research and other methods.  He works closely with teachers in monitoring the curriculum implementation in the classroom and encouraging continuous teacher education and improvement.  He is responsible for mentoring the shepherding of the students' interaction with parents on student issues.  

In addition to his duties as Principal, Mr. Woernle teaches Medieval History Honors to tenth grade students and is the Boys Soccer Coach.

Eric is now in his second year as Principal, but is no stranger to GCA, having taught Logic, Latin, and Omnibus (Middle Ages through the Reformation) the first two years of GCA (2004 - 2006).  In addition, he taught fifth grade at Providence Center for Classical Studies.  His wife, Tara, taught second and third grades at GCA during those years.

 

Eric earned a B.A. in History and an M.A. in Christianity and Classical Studies.  Most recently, Eric served us through the United States Army for eight years.  His last position was as Logistical Planner - Brigate 1v1, Officer in Charge stationed at Fort Meade, MD.

Eric is married to Tara and they have three daughters whom are students at GCA in K4, 1st grade and 4th grade.  They recently welcomed a new baby boy to the family in September 2016.

 

Nancy Blough - Admissions Director / Marketing and Communications Director / School Counselor

Mrs. Blough helped start Greenville Classical Academy in 2004 and served as a board member from 2004 - 2007.  She served as Athletic Director from 2008 - July 2014 and Upper School Director starting July 2010 when the Upper School transitioned to a University Model School.  She has been GCA's Admissions Director since January 2014.  She is also the Marketing and Communications Director and School Counselor.  She received a B.S. in Business Education with a minor in English from Bob Jones University.  Nancy and her husband of 28 years, Hudson, live in Greer, SC and are members of Woodruff Road Presbyterian Church.  They have three children and their youngest son is a 10th grade student at GCA.  She enjoys photography, dogs, traveling and drinking all kinds of tea.


Jenny Spears - Dean of Academics and Faculty Development / Curriculum Development / School Counselor

Mrs. Spears earned a B.S. in Home Economics and an M.S. in Education both from Georgia Southern College (now University.) In addition to being the Dean of Academics, Dean of Faculty Development, Dean of Curriculum Development and School Counselor, Jenny also teaches Algebra I. Jenny previously was a K5 teacher, 5th/6th grade teacher, board member and Dean of Faculty at GCA.  She has 23 years of teaching experience and two years of academic advising experience as Diploma Consultant at Veritas Press Online Academy in PA.

Janet Godwin - K4

Mrs. Godwin earned a B.A. from the University of South Carolina Upstate.  She taught kindergarten at Southside Christian School for two years. She and her husband Roger have four grown children and are members at Second Presbyterian Church in downtown Greenville. This is her seventh year teaching K4 at GCA.






Debi Lowery - K5

Mrs. Lowery earned a B.A. in Guidance and Counseling and a M.S. in Counseling from Bob Jones University. This is her 14th year teaching kindergarten.  Debi and her husband Scott have one daughter. Debi is an avid runner and it's not unusual to see her running around the playground during recess with her "Smart Cookies" as she lovingly calls her K5 students.  This is her sixth year teaching K5 at GCA.





Trista Tilley - K5

Mrs. Tilley earned B.S. degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education from Vanderbilt University.  Mrs. Tilley and her husband Mark have four children, three of whom are students at GCA in 2nd grade, 8th grade, and 11th grade. Their oldest son graduated from GCA in May.  This is her fourth year teaching K5 at GCA.





Diane Bales -1st Grade

Mrs. Bales and her family recently moved to the Upstate from Florida.  Diane earned a B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education from Pensacola Christian College.  She and her husband Keith have two children both of whom are students at GCA in 8th and 10th grades.  This is her seventh year of teaching and her first year of teaching at GCA.









Rachel Lockaby - 2nd Grade

Mrs. Lockaby has a B.S. in Elementary Education from Tabernacle Christian College.  She has 17 years of previous teaching experience in Christian schools.  She and her husband John have three children, the youngest of which is in 4th grade at GCA.  This is her fourth year of teaching 2nd Grade at GCA.






Cindy Mann - 3rd Grade

Mrs. Mann graduated from Bob Jones University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She and her husband Johnny have an adult daughter.  She taught for several years in Christian and public schools before homeschooling her daughter from K-12th grade. They are members of Second Presbyterian Church in Greenville where Cindy teaches Sunday School and her husband serves as elder.  This is her eigth year teaching at GCA




Ruth Vidal - 4th Grade

Mrs. Vidal graduated from Bob Jones University with a B.S. in Elementary Education.  Prior to coming to teach at GCA, Ruth conducted classes in public, private, and Christian schools teaching art history as part of the BJU Museum & Gallery staff.  She is an IEW Accredited Instructor. This is her first year teaching at GCA.






Terry Tate

Terry Tate - 5th Grade

Mrs. Tate has a B.A. in Elementary Education and a M. Ed. in Reading Specialist/Special Education.  She has been married to Keith for 37 years and they have five adult children and four grandchildren.  In addition to homeschooling her children classically, Terry has over 20 years of formal classroom teaching experience.  Before she came to GCA, Terry taught 5th grade at Shannon Forest Christian School. Terry loves using Latin in her teaching, and has taught Latin for a total of 11 years.  Terry is an IEW Accredited Instuctor.  This is her second year of teaching 5th grade at GCA.  




Kim Matlock - 6th Grade

Miss Matlock has a B.S. and a M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Bob Jones University. She currently holds SC state certification as well as SCACS certification. Kim taught third grade for three years at Hampton Park Christian School. Kim is an IEW Accredited Instructor.  She is in her eighth year of teaching at GCA.






Muriel Murr - K4 - 6th Grade Music, Private Piano Lessons

Mrs. Murr has a B.S. in Music Education, a M.A. in Christian Education, and has done post graduate work in piano. She taught piano, piano pedagogy, and music education at Bob Jones University for 50 years.  She is in her sixth year of teaching Music at GCA.







Chris Barnes - Government/Economics Honors, Ancient History Honors, Athletic Director

Mr. Barnes holds a SC certificate to teach Social Studies.  He earned a B.A. in Social Studies and a B.S. in History from Southern Wesleyan University in Central, SC.  He earned his MDiv from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  In the past, he taught for Christian Learning Centers of Greenville Country as a Bible Release-Time educator serving Woodmont High and Brashier Charter.  Before serving on the mission field, he taught at Southside High School.  He has previously coached high school basketball, volleyball, softball and soccer.  This is Mr. Barnes' third year of teaching at GCA.

Mrs. Bump received a B.A. from Bob Jones University with a major in English and a minor in History  She also received a Master of Arts in Teaching English.  This is her third year of teaching at GCA.

Dr. Carrick earned a B.A in Modern Languages, a Certificate of Education, and a M.A. in Modern Languages from Oxford University, England.  He also earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree in Preaching from Westminster Theological Seminary, California. This is his third year of teaching Latin at GCA.

Miss Downing earned a B.S. in Math Education from Bob Jones University.  In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she also plays the piano for the Hymn of the Month for Upper School Chapel.  This is her fourth year of teaching at GCA.







Lisa Downing - Geometry, Physics

Mrs. Downing earned a B.A. from Erskine College in Math Education.  Lisa and her husband Mike have six adult daughters and five grandsons. This is her 10th year of teaching math at GCA.








Jessica MacQuarrie - Rhetoric-Public Speaking / Events Coordinator

Miss MacQuarrie earned a B.S. in Speech Education from Northland International University and an M.A. in Theater Arts from Bob Jones University. She previously taught Fundamentals of Speech at BJU.  This is Miss MacQuarrie's second year of teaching Public Speaking at GCA and her first year as Events Coordinator.






Jennifer McDonald - World Geography, SC History & Civics / Late Stay Coordinator

Mrs. McDonald has a degree in Christian Education.  She has taught in Christian private schools while having some experience in home school co-ops.  She and her husband Chris have two children who are students at GCA in 7th grade and 5th grade.  They moved from Florida to the Upstate last summer.  This is her first year of teaching at GCA.






Rebekah McIlwain - Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III Honors

Miss McIlwain received a B.S. from North Greenville University.  She previously taught in Honduras. This is her second year of teaching Spanish at GCA. Her future plans are to go teach in a mission school in Peru.

Mr. Moller has 32 years experience teaching math and science in Christian Schools.  He and his wife Anna moved to the Upstate from Charleston in 2015.  They are members at Downtown Presbyterian Church.  This is Mr. Moller's second year of teaching at GCA.

Mrs. Swanson has a B.S. in Family and Consumer Science Education with a Minor in Composite Science, an M.S. in Educational Leadership and an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership all from Bob Jones University.  She and her husband Mark have two children.  In the past Mrs. Swanson taught Physical Science, Chemistry, and Algebra I Honors at GCA. This is Mrs. Swanson's seventh year of teaching at GCA.




Grover Timms - Old Testament Survey, New Testament Survey, Hermeneutics, Lunch Monitor

Mr. Timms has a B.A. in Bible from Columbia International University in Columbia, SC and a Master of Divinity from Covenant Theological Seminary.  He is Senior Pastor at Fulton Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Greer.  In the past, Mr. Timms has taught New Testament Survey, Christian Worldview, Systematic Theology and Apologetics at GCA.  Grover and his wife Lisa have three children, the oldest of whom graduated from GCA in 2011 and middle child who is a senior this year at GCA. This is Mr. Timms' sixth year of teaching at GCA.

This is Sarah's second year as the Office Manager and Bookkeeper at GCA.  She earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Milligan College. Sarah and her husband Josh have a daughter in 4th grade at GCA. They are members of Grace Church -- Harrison Bridge.








Audra Erkens - Office Assistant, Girls Volleyball Coach

Audra assists Sarah Goodnough in the office on Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.  She also teaches P.E. to 1st - 6th grade students and is the girls volleyball coach.  She and her husband Randy have four children all of whom are students at GCA.  They are members of Heritage Bible Church in Greer.

This is Christie's second year at GCA.  She has a B.S. in Elementary Education from Furman University and an M.A. from Clemson University. She and her husband Brian have twins (a boy and a girl) in K5 at GCA.

Dr. George Hopson, Jr., Chairman

Dr. Hopson serves as Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at North Greenville University located in Tigerville, SC. He also is assistant coach for NGU's soccer team. He previously served as Headmaster at Pleasant Grove Christian School in Fountain Inn. He and his wife Linda reside in Mauldin and are members of Woodruff Road Presbyterian Church where George serves as an elder.  George has served on the board for seven years.







Faith Martzin, Secretary

Faith is married to John and have three children: Their son James graduated from GCA in May 2015 and is attending Clemson University. Their daughter Lydia is a 12th grade student at GCA.  Their married daughter, Nina, has a three-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter making John and Faith grandparents of a GCA student.  Faith is a member of Fairview Presbyterian Church (PCA) and is a Jr. High Sunday School teacher and choir member.  She is also a Chaplain for American Heritage Girls. She received a B.A. from Bob Jones University in 1985 and a J.D. from The University of South Carolina School of Law, in 1988. She practices law at Martzin Law located off Woodruff Road. She was born in Cookville, TN and currently lives in Fountain Inn.  Faith has served on the board for 11 years. 




Jim Crotti, Treasurer

Jim and his wife Annette live in Greer, SC.  Their daughter Alexandra is a 12th grade student at GCA.  Jim is a Senior Vice President at Willis. They are members of Grace Church on Pelham Road in Greenville.  Jim has served on the board for three years.









Larry Myers

Larry and his wife Carese have five children - all of whom are students at GCA in 9th grade, 8th grade, 5th grade, 2nd grade and 1st grade. Larry owns a construction business called General Contract Management (GCM).  Larry and Carese live in the Greenville area and are members of Downtown Presbyterian Church in Greenville.  Larry has served on the board for seven years.








Del Dee Hindman

Del Dee is married to Dr. Matthew Hindman and they live in Greenville, SC with their four children, all of whom are students at GCA.   Del Dee is a stay-at-home mom who currently volunteers at GCA as a board member and coordinator for GCA's annual Fall Festival and Holiday Market. She is passionate about mentoring and enjoys working with ladies of all ages who are seeking a Christ-filled life.  Del Dee and her family are  members of Community Baptist Church in Greer.  Del Dee has served on the board for three years.

 




Ron Babington

Ron and his wife Jenny-Lynn have four children who are all students at GCA, from K4 to 4th grade.  They live in West Greenville and are members of Redeemer Presbyterian Church (PCA), where Ron also serves as a Deacon.  Ron is a Director at S&P Global Market Intelligence.  This is his first year on the board. 








Jason Sprinkle


Jason and his wife Melissa have five children, four of whom are students at GCA.  They are members of Woodruff Road Presbyterian Church in Simpsonville.  This is his first year on the board.
